Peru controls large prison >>riot<<, one inmate dead LIMA (Reuter) - One Peruvian prisoner was killed and at least one other suffered a gunshot wound when about 3,000 inmates >>rioted<< for five hours Friday at a maximum security jail in Lima, authorities said. Police and government negotiators persuaded the prisoners to give up their protest at about 5 p.m. local time in return for some improvements in their living conditions. ``The >>riot<< is completely over,'' said Congress' human rights committee president Daniel Espichan as he left the prison. ``One man died from a bullet fired when police tried to calm things down.'' Espichan said one prisoner was injured, but an inmate who identified himself as ``Africa'' claimed four were hurt. He was speaking via telephone with a local radio station from inside the jail. About 300 police entered the San Pedro prison after the >>riot<< broke out at midday, firing tear gas and guns as a helicopter flew overhead. But about 2,000 inmates stayed on the prison roof throughout the afternoon, burning mattresses and shouting anti-police slogans. The San Pedro jail, with a long history of >>violence<<, houses 5,200 prisoners, most of whom are awaiting trial. The prisoners said they were protesting for better conditions and against the alleged kidnapping of one of their leaders. Improvements in prison conditions was one of the main demands made by the Marxist Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) during the recent Lima hostage crisis that ended with the rebels' deaths during a military raid in April. ------------------------------------------------------------ NewsHound is a service of Knight-Ridder, Inc.
