Mexican teachers call off >>strike<<, head back home MEXICO CITY (Reuter) - Thousands of teachers from across Mexico returned to their homes from Mexico City Saturday after calling off a month of protest marches and >>strikes<< that caused traffic havoc in the huge capital. The public schoolteachers, part of the dissident National Coordinating Council of Education >>Workers<< (CNTE), called off the >>strike<< late Friday after making some progress with authorities in their demands for a wage hike. The teachers said they would continue talks with local officials in their states, but warned they would return to the capital again if their demands were not fully met. In early May, the government announced a salary rise of six percent for teachers plus an extra 10 percent in bonuses. The teachers called that ridiculous, saying their real salaries were dropping because of high inflation. Teachers said their salaries ranged from about 600 pesos ($75) to 1,400 pesos ($177) every two weeks. ------------------------------------------------------------ NewsHound is a service of Knight-Ridder, Inc.
