In a protest that began last week, 150 employees of a plant in Smolensk are completing the march to Moscow in shifts, ITAR-Tass reported. Eight others were on their second day of a hunger >>strike<< Saturday at plant. Russia's once-prized nuclear plants have not been spared the government wage delays affecting millions of >>workers<< across the country. The Smolensk plant, which has three Chernobyl-type reactors, is owed $270 million by the government and clients, according to ITAR-Tass. On Friday, President Boris Yeltsin ordered his government to pay the back wages within three months, but senior government officials say the deadline is unrealistic. ------------------------------------------------------------ NewsHound is a service of Knight-Ridder, Inc.
