Miners >>strike<< at Portuguese copper mine LISBON, Portugal (Reuter) - Several hundred miners at Europe's largest copper mine began an indefinite >>strike<< Monday over working hours, company and labor officials said. A spokesman for Somincor, the state-owned company that operates the Neves Corvo mine, said that output was expected to drop to about 20 percent of usual as a result of the action. However, according to local radio reports, >>striking<< >>workers<< were blocking access to the mine near Beja, some 150 miles southeast of Lisbon, raising the question of whether any work would be possible. The mine, which employs some 500 miners, produced 107,000 metric tons of copper in 1996. It also produces small quantities of tin. The >>workers<< are angry at the company's plans to introduce seven-day shifts. The company says falling copper yields mean more intensive working of the mine is necessary to ensure that it can compete with other international producers. ------------------------------------------------------------ NewsHound is a service of Knight-Ridder, Inc.
