More than 12 hurt as >>strike<< disrupts Nepalese capital KATHMANDU, July 8 (Kyodo) -- More than a dozen people were injured in stray incidents of violence in Kathmandu and the adjoining Patan and Bhaktapur cities during a one-day >>strike<< Tuesday. The >>strike<<, called by the student-wing of the opposition Nepali Congress Party to protest recent price hikes for petroleum products, brought normal life to a halt in the cities, witnesses said. Police and security personnel were deployed in the three cities in large numbers, while picketers were out in force despite the rain. Activists marching in procession fought with police at several places, and the opposition claimed that 600 arrests were made. Schools were closed and shop shutters down in the markets, while transport vehicles, including pedicabs, were off the streets. Nepal Oil Corp. had hiked prices of petroleum products by an average 17% late last month, citing losses by the state-owned organization. ------------------------------------------------------------ NewsHound is a service of Knight-Ridder, Inc.
