UPS driver stabbed; Two >>striking<< >>workers<< charged with attempted
murder

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) -- A UPS driver was stabbed six times Friday as he sat
in a truck at a traffic light, and television station WTVJ reported two
>>striking<< drivers were charged with attempted murder.

``This particular incident was pretty extreme,'' said United Parcel Service
spokesman Frank Furie.

Roderick Carter was treated and released from a local hospital.

Angel Miegla, 30, and Orestes Espinosa, whose age was not given, were
arrested, the television station reported.

Mike Cortez, a >>striking<< >>worker<<, denied the two were members of the
Teamsters.

``The company is claiming it is the Teamsters. Let them prove it,'' he
said.

Tensions have been growing as Teamsters and UPS negotiators ended a
federally mediated session Friday with little hope of soon ending a
five-day-old delivery >>strike<<.

It was not known Friday whether Carter is part of UPS management or a union
member who had crossed the picket line.

The company contended that 7,000 of some 185,000 Teamsters had crossed
picket lines nationally. Union members say those figures are exaggerated.
