Subject: AUT: re: news on Toni Negri

Unfortunately, Toni Negri's situation has not changed. He remains in
prison at Rebibbia, near Rome. The petition for his release organized in
Paris was published about a week ago in a French newspaper (I don't know
which one, I've been away) and presented to the European parliament in
Strasbourg. It had almost a thousand signatures. There has been
discussion in Italy of either an amnesty or an indulto (a commutation or
reduction of sentences), but there has been no action lately.

Toni appreciates all the support. He is doing well in prison, although
of course worried about his prospects. He is allowed visits from
family. He and I exchange letters regularly.

Antonio Callari, Warren Montag, Ted Stoltze, and myself have formed a US
committee in support of his release. We have recently sent out a press
release in the hope of attracting publicity to the case.
