Folks, the BFM list ceased some time back, though Vikki John seems as
busy as ever....

If anyone wants me to post stuff about the *ceasefire* and negotiations,
I can send the last bunch to them. The BRA's Francis Ona, as many will
know, did not turn up to the meeting with Australian Foreign Minister
Downer on the imperial warship *Tobruk*. Anyone wonder why that might
be? Seems to me that with Downer still around - and his agenda, despite
denials, must be to reopen the Panguna copper mine - there is never a
justification for ceasing to fire (at him).

Reports that Australia is committing $100 million over five years is not
a bad option on Downer's part given that when the mine was last in
production - 1989 figures - CRA profits from the mine were between
$200-300 Million per year. There's a lot of copper running through all
the phone lines on which these dinky little mailinglists, websites,
emails and so on run.

Whatever - a way to get info on Bougainville via the copper wires is
available. For the interest of Mattcapri and anyone else, a useful (not-
yet listserved/majordomoed or whatever) mailing list of Bougainville
news items is compiled intermittently by Norbert Braumann. I've
excerpted the sign-on bit from his introductory mail (cutting out a
general intro-background you'll get again anyway). Sorry if this is a
repeat for some of you:

<snip> ...here comes the technical.
I will be running two differing mailing lists so you will have to decide
on how interested you are:

[BougI-L] Bougainville Info - List
for ALL the news and "papers" I find in the net.
This "normal" list suites to activists or the very interested
to get an overview on what is published on the whole issue.

[BougI-xL] Bougainville Info eXcerpts or
Bougainville Info eXtended List (includes BougI-L
subscribers)
for the interested people, specialised journalists, or for
the
overloaded activists who don't need to know all the details.
This mailing list will cover say about a third of BougI-L.

The sources I'll cover are all info I get through my eMail contacts
(you?)
and by exploring known websites, mailing list archives and newsgroups,
and
by searching the following media (which are easily searchable).

[BougI-L PNG-Nat.] The National (PNG)
[BougI-L PNG-P.C.] The Post Courier (PNG)
[BougI-L NZ-Press] The Press (New Zealand)
[BougI-L Syd.M.H.] The Sydney Morning Herald
[BougI-L Melb.AGE] The AGE (Melbourne)
[BougI-L Syd.M.H.] The Sydney Morning Herald
[BougI-L Melb.AGE] The AGE (Melbourne)
[BougI-L Austral.] The Australian
[BougI-L Aus.Fin.] The Australian Financial Review
[BougI-L ABC] Australian Broadcasting Corporation - Radio
Australia
[BougI-L BBC] British Broadcasting Corporation
[BougI-L PIR] Pacific Islands Report (Hawaii)
[BougI-L GLW] Greenleft Weekly (Democratic Socialist Party,
Austr.)
[BougI-L ISO] International Socialist Organisation (Australia)
[BougI-L Guardian] The Guardian (Communist Party of Australia)

...and others not extra listed here.
I will also be covering all statements of the Bougainville Freedom
Movement
in Australia and media releases of the BIG as far as I get them.
Since these are so called moderated mailing lists, I will also pass on
valuable information I get from subscribers or other eMail contacts.

these lists are run manually, not (yet) automatically by a listserver
(or majordomo), but despite this fact, i want to get as little work
as possible, so please subscribe/unsubscribe in the following way:

****************************************************************************
 mail-TO: N.Braumann-AT-tu-bs.de (I'm the "owner" of BougI-L and
BougI-xL)
 Subject: [un?] subscribe BougI-L [or BougI-xL] <your_eMail_address>

if possible, copy the Subject also into your mail itself (in the body).
if you want to change the list just write change instead of
[un]subscribe.
