Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 14:21:18 -0400 (EDT) Subject: AUT: Lobbying U.S. Congress for Hearings on Cassini Earth flyby To the NoFlyby Email list, The purpose of this email alert is to give you information to lobby members of U.S. Congress on Science and Space Committees to initiate a Congressional investigation on the risks of the Cassini Earth flyby, which is scheduled for next August 18. A list of these members and their contact information is below. This information will also be posted at: http://www.nonviolence.org/noflyby/action/index.htm and can be found from noflyby table of contents under "Actions to Stop the Earth Flyby." The flyby is potentially the most dangerous part of the mission. NoFlyby will soon be posting segments of a recently surfaced "Safety Evaluation Report" on Cassini for The White House by the U.S. government's Interagency Nuclear Safety Review Panel that included NASA. They say that the Cassini "flyby" accident could cause "several tens of thousands of latent cancer fatalities worldwide." Independent scientists say casualties could be even higher. Your help to influence one Member of Congress can begin the process of reviewing and exposing the risks of the Cassini Earth flyby. Why is Congress and the public more interested by illicit sex affairs than what threatens the health of billions of people? This is the time for us to act. We have time to let our voice be heard before the scheduled 6/24/99 Cassini probe's final swingby of Venus to accelerate toward Earth at record flyby speeds, 42,000 mph (68,000 km) with a cargo of 73 pounds (32,8 kg) of the deadliest material on Earth. Taking such risks is madness to accept without actions to the contrary. NoFlyby proposes to support the advice of Dr. Michio Kaku, to have the Cassini probe sent into the sun where it would be destroyed. We need your help to make this message heard. Peace in space and everywhere, Joe McIntire and Jonathan Haber NoFlyby Coordinators Action Site to Stop Cassini Earth Flyby http://www.nonviolence.org/noflyby P.O. Box 1999 Wendell Depot, MA 01380 <noflyby-AT-nonviolence.org> ps: In regards to the last noflyby alert, the second vote in the U.S. Senate on the cloture for Cochran's Star Wars bill, did not come up and is not expected until next session, in about a month. Being one vote shy of passing this dangerous bill is auspicious, especially when every Republican member voted for it and Clinton's woes could set the stage for more votes in the future. This shows that the countdown to disaster is on course, but so is our effort. In lobbying Congress NoFlyby proposes the following suggestions: [For members of Congress and aides who receive this email, we hope you will give this issue serious consideration to investigate the risks of the Cassini Earth flyby.] 1) call first and ask for the aide responsible for the space committee. Write down their name and extension number (to follow-up on your call in the future), confirm their fax number and tell them your thoughts about the urgency and importance of Congress investigating the risks of the Cassini Earth flyby soon, before June 24, 1999. Use any of the NoFlyby site postings to support your claims. To send your fax free from an e-mail, check http://china.syr.edu/fax/faxbyemail.html for instructions. 2) send a hard copy of your fax to the member of Congress and to the attention of their aide. 3) gather new information, call again and ask if the member has any response to your request. Suggest that the aide review the NoFlyby website. Try to get them on your side, be persistent and respectful. 4) send copies or reports of your lobbying to noflyby and let us know if a complimentary copy of the video, "Nukes in Space" or the "Wrong Stuff" book by Karl Grossman, should be sent to any of your contacts. "Nukes in Space 2 - Unacceptable Risks" will be available by late October. 5) try to recruit others to help with lobbying, pass around this message and the Plutonium NoFlyby Statement and help us unite with other organizations to be more effective. 6) take this campaign in stride, do what you can and know that our efforts are cumulative. *************************************************************************** U.S. SENATE SUBCOMMITTEE ON SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SPACE http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/cgi-bin/commpage.cgi?committee=scommerce_s cience 428 Hart Senate Office Building (Majority) Phone: (202)224-8172 Fax: (202)228-0326 558 Dirksen Senate Office Building (Minority) Ph.
