Date: Sun, 1 Nov 1998 11:50:06 -0800 (PST) From: Chris <red-AT-iww.org> Subject: AUT: Arrest of president of South Korea's largest union (fwd) ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jon Bekken <jbekken-AT-igc.apc.org> /* Written 5:05 PM Oct 26, 1998 by labornews-AT-labornet.org in igc:labr.asia */ /* ---------- "Arrest of president of South Korea'" ---------- */ LabourStart - http://www.labourstart.org The president of the largest union in South Korea, Dan Byung-ho (head of the Korean Metal Workers Federation and vice president of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions) was arrested yesterday, 19 October, at 13:00 Korea time by armed police and dragged off into custody for his role organizing the general strikes in May and July this year. I've published the entire text of the KMWF press release in today's LabourStart and encourage all of you to read it carefully. The picture painted of industrial relations in South Korea today under the Kim Dae Jung regime is chilling. As I write these words, there is NO EVIDENCE of an international labour response to the arrest even though more than 24 hours have passed. I suggest that readers of this message take the following steps: 1. Send a solidarity message to the KMWF immediately -- write to kmwf-AT-netsgo.com 2. Add a link in your web pages to the KMWF statement, located at http://www.labourstart.org/kmwf981019.html (Unfortunately, the KMWF website has not been updated, and the statement does not appear there yet.) 3. Pass on this message to other mailing lists, newsgroups, web forums and so on. Thanks. Eric Lee --- from list aut-op-sy-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
