CALL FOR PAPERS

"debate" - Voices from the South African Left

Issue 6 (2001)

"Building connections: local, regional and global"

In the past few years, capitalist and corporate globalisation has
been the target of resistance and mobilisation articulated by a
plurality of social movements and subjects. This process has also
witnessed a renewed demand for connections and circulation of
struggles between diverse localities towards a new globalised
dimension. Seattle, Washington, Melbourne, Prague, Nice and Porto
Alegre are the laboratories where such links were explored. "debate"
#6 will analyze the position of South African struggles in relation
to these processes, and the possibilities for defining cross-border
regional linkages. Questions that we will address include:

- Who are the actors of the current wave of globalisation of
resistance? Which processes of formation of subjectivity and
organisation define them?
- How are different social struggles in today's South and Southern
Africa relating to these global dynamics? Which contents and
criticisms do these struggles raise?
- How is resistance against capitalist globalisation elaborated in
left and working class debates in South Africa and in the region?
- What are the issues and the processes through which an
internationalisation of struggle and solidarity can emerge in the
Southern African region?

We are looking for theoretical contributions, critical inputs and
analyses that show how these questions are dealt with in the daily
experience of urban and rural social movements, activists and
organisations.

If you are interested in submitting articles, reviews, poetry or
pictures, please send your contribution to "DEBATE", PO Box 517, Wits
2050, Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA, or via e-mail to
debatesa-AT-hotmail.com. The deadline for submission is 26 MAY 2001.
Articles should not be longer than 3,000 words (1,500 for book
reviews).
