i might be totally off the track here but i think in about the 8th century 
the Eastern Christian Church (ie the one controlled by the Byzantine Empire) 
issued an edict ordering all icons destroyed. thus the only surviving icons 
from that period are from those parts (such as Syria) that had already been 
conquered by the Islamic Empire or whatever it was called then. obviously 
the ban was lifted at some stage (i'd guess no later than the 12th century) 
as Eastern Orthodox churches are now again full of icons.
