From: "Peter Jovanovic" <peterzoran-AT-hotmail.com> Subject: AUT: recent events in Papuan New Guinea Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 16:48:18 +1000 hi all a few days ago police in the PNG capital Port Moresby attacked a mostly student crowd who were protesting IMF/World Bank and Australian influence in PNG. Three students were killed. The students had successfully blockaded the suburb housing most of the government offices for about a week. on TV i saw an ex-prime minister of PNG, who is currently in hopsital in Oz, say that what was needed was a government of national unity to deal with this crisis. it's great how the ruling class are able to forget their differences when threatened isn't it? the oz foreign minister said in parliament that it would be a disaster for the PNG economy and people (ie Australian capital) if the 'reform' program was stopped. there's a few stories on melbourne indymedia about these events including this one: http://melbourne.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=12614&group=webcast people could also try www.smh.com.au which is one of the better bourgeois papers in oz. pete _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. --- from list aut-op-sy-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
