Security for the G8: Land-based Air Missles at Genoa's
Airport

Milano (Reuters)

Small earth-to-air missiles positioned in the area of
Genoa's airoport will be watching over the ligurian
city during the G8 Summit.  This has been confirmed by
Reuters through the Press Secretary of the Italian
Ministry of Defense, Colonel Alberto Battaglini.

"There is nothing excessive about these precautions. 
Such a measure was also planned by the previous
government.  It could seem worthy of criticism, but in
reality it is there to act as a deterent in case of an
aerial incursion during the G8 summit" explained
Colonel Battaglini.

"They are small missiles whose use, by the Air force
and coordinated through the president's council, will
only be to function as a deterrent, and to discourage
any anti-G8 aerial campaigns and pose no danger to the
residential population", added the Ministry's
spokeperson.

"All of the armed forces are taking part in the
security plan for the summit", continued the Colonel.

"In addition to the Air Force, as is well-known, the
navy will be there as well."
