From: "cwright" <cwright-AT-21stcentury.net> Subject: AUT: Fw: [chicagodan] Invite to Weekend of Discussions. Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2001 23:27:45 -0500 This is an invitation to anyone who wants to come. We will be sending out a more detailed agenda, though we are still debating and discussing and trying to find a few more speakers who have been actively involved in protests. Right now, we are really looking for someone or two someones to speak on issues of race, capital and globalization and gender, capital and globalization, as well as trying to get someone from the struggles in Latin America or Asia against globalization to come and speak. I would welcome any suggestions and I would love to have a stronger autonomist presence at this event. We will also have some Mexican workers speaking who are on strike right now here in Chicago. A fair chunk of the conference will be bilingual, but I do not know if we can cover the whole thing, as we lack people who are really bi-cultural, not simply bi-lingual. p.s. The title and invite is not mine, but such is life. Defeating the Offensive of Global Capitalism. Fighting to Win. You are invited to join activists from the workplaces, the neighborhoods and the anti-global capitalist movement in a weekend of discussions. Friday, Saturday, Sunday 7th, 8th, 9th, September. Chicago. Hosted by the Chicago Direct Action Network. Speakers will include Staughton Lynd, Workers Solidarity Club of Youngstown, Ohio, John Clarke, Ontario Coalition Against Poverty, John Reimann elected leader of the North California Carpenters wildcat strike, plus speakers from the Chicago education struggles such as the Little Village hunger strikers, speakers from the anti-racist movement and speakers and participants from the movement against Global capitalism. Life is getting harder for working class people as wages decline, the work rate increases and the real cost of living goes up. Billions of people worldwide are starving and the planet is polluted to the point where irreversible damage has already been done. These threats to life on earth result from the offensive of the major corporations and their capitalist system as they seek to increase their profits and control. There have been many struggles against this global capitalist onslaught. Strikes, mass movements, demonstrations, uprisings and the new movement that emerged in Seattle all challenge the corporate agenda. Confronting and halting this offensive is the central task facing activists and working people today. Chicago Direct Action Network is hosting this weekend to discuss the strategy necessary if the working class and the new anti global-capitalist movement are to fight and to win. We will draw lessons from the failed policies of the leaders of the trade unions, as well as those of the the mainstream protest and liberal organizations. We will discuss the inability of the various oppositions that have developed in the unions in the recent past to lead new successful struggles. We will discuss how the fight against racism, sexism and other oppressions relate to the fight against capitalism. And we will also consider the new movement that has developed since Seattle, its strengths and its weaknesses, and how it can unite with the struggles against the corporate agenda that have been taking place in India, Ecuador, Turkey, Bolivia, etc. The old “politics of protest” have failed. The purpose of this weekend is to develop strategies and ideas which can halt the corporations destructive policies. If you wish to be involved in struggles that win, to develop alternative policies to those of the leaders of the unions and the mainstream protest and liberal movements, to build unity between the new anti-global capitalist movement and the activists in the workplaces and neighborhoods and unions, then come along to our weekend of discussions. ------------------------ Yahoo!
