The Federal Court has just found that there was no legal basis for detaining
the people on the Tampa. The judge ordered that the Aust Govt bring the
people to the Australian mainland by Friday (or pending the determination of
any appeal, whichever is the later).

The judge said that it is an 'ancient' legal principle law that a person
cannot be detained without legal authority, and the government here had no
such authority.

I'll try to get a copy of the judgment to post shortly.
