I forget the context - but it seems his activities are appreciated by a few people. He contributes regularly to our discussion group here on Merseyside and we benefit from his wide knowledge of a world movement. He's on his travels again - anyway his post is self explanatory. If you can help I know he will be grateful. So if you can't respond I wont besurprised. At then end of the month I am going to Moscow to attend aconference - 'Victor Serge and anti-totalitarian socialism'. I'll send youall a report when I get back. After Moscow I am travelling on to theindustrial city of Perm in the Urals, far to the east of Moscow. I have beeninvited there by Boris Iklov from the political workers union 'Worker'. I havebeen in contact with Boris for several years and have had long writtenarguments with him over what I see as his adaptation to Russianchauvanism His main concern is to build trade unions and effective working classorganisation that hardly exists there. In the old USSR he was a health andsafety inspector. He became convinced that 'communism' was bad forhealth and the environment and ended up in prison for saying so. In prison hemet with a car worker who had led a strike in his factory. This man toldhim to go and read Marx and that he would find it had nothing to do with thepolitics of the USSR politicians. Since that time Boris has been an activesocialist. I know little about the organisation he belongs to. From hisletters I guess it is a small network of activists in the city. His group wants to organise an international conference onglobalisation some time in the future. He has asked me if it would be possiblefor me to bring £150 for the group in order that they can get a PC toconnect to the web and use email.Whatever disagreements I have with him I feel its would be a basic gestureof solidarity to help get them connected to the net. So if any of youfeel able to contribute to this please send cheques ( payable to WorkersAid ) to Bob Myers, 29 Demesne Road, Manchester, M16 8HJ. If I raise morethan that amount I will donate the balance to the Victor Serge working classlibrary in Moscow that is organising the serge conference Best wishes,Bob Myers _______________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --- from list aut-op-sy-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
