Firstly, in a public coalition drawn together on a limited political basis, you have no political basis for throwing the vanguardists out. It will seem to the non-revolutionaries or the less theoretically motivated people to be authoritarian and that would give the vanguardists what they want, sympathy. Secondly, the battle with them is first and foremost political. They follow two rules: 1) hide their politics, go for the least common denominator 2) try to gain control of the leadership through organization. Since they already have preconceived ways of functioning, they will be able to always propose ways to do things. Therefore we have to a) be ready to make fights about the political basis of the coalitions, even if we lose and b) propose ways of doing things that consciously undermine them politically and organizationally. There is no policing solution that will overcomes the vanguardists. We have the hard and rewarding task of coming up with ways of doing things that reflect autonomist and anarchist ways of functioning, and which help foment a different kind of organization, which promote self-organization. I posted something to Harald which hopefully will be through by the time you read this. Consider what I proposed to the Chicago Ad Hoc Coalition as a way of opposing the vanguardists.
