There can be no doubt that there have been rivalries between UNOCAL/US and Iran and Russia. Iran and Russia want to run the pipelines from Turkmenistan, kazakhastan, etc through their countries, while UNOCAL has tried in the past to run the pipes through other countries (and in this regard, even supported the Taliban at one point when they wanted to run the pipes through Afghansistan) I dont know that this instance in itself would be enough to discredit H&N's theory. After all, they do say that Empire is emerging and do not say that the nation-state is dead yet...So Empire is ae emerging trend...which is not to say that the nation-state does not come out in defence of its domestic companies...especially with something like oil on which the industry of these countries depend.
