Those in favour of globalisation say increasing world trade and market liberalisation through free trade blocks, multilateral agreements such as the WTO, and global financial institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF, should make everyone richer. But, behind the promises of prosperity there exists a grim reality: Transnational corporations now control more than 60% of all global trade while at the same time farmers are forced off their lands to make way for large-scale monoculture crops for export. Workers lose jobs to machines and corporate flight. Women are forced to sell their bodies in the tourism industry. Indigenous peoples forced off their lands for short-term mining profits. And, as they wait for globalisation's unseen rewards, these people are rapidly losing any democratic space that they may have had to voice their opposition to these policies and to seek their rightful dues. CULTURE OF RESISTANCE FESTIVAL AGT GLOBALISATION In conjunction with the Nov 9-13 International Days of GLOBAL ACTION against the WTO's New Round of Negotiations in Qatar from Nov 9-13, Ana. K.'s Kolektif presents the Culture of Resistance Festival Against Globalisation which seeks to provoke and explore issues on the globalisation debate with a cultural festival of alternative films, exhibitions, workshops, poetry readings, zine fair, and concert. Workshop 2.00pm Activity Workshop : T-shirt Printing Keen on making statements of your own instead of being a slave to corporate logos? This live demo will allow you to try your hand at making statements and an opportunity to 'dye' for your politics. Stop being a fashion victim. Start victimizing fashion. Concert: 3.00-7.00pm Culture of Resistance Against Globalisation Concert & Film Screening Extended play of uneasy listening with poetry, spoken word, music and films of resistance with recently-declared independent bands, musicians and troubled poets seek to drown the voice of Babylon with some stirring acoustic performances. Come to listen or maybe read something of your own. (Note : Performances and films will be screened intermittently according to schedule) Political Films: 3.00 pm Short : Oracion (Cuba, 1963) 7 mins - Spanish with English subtitles Based on a poem by Ernesto Cardenal, this brilliant short film layers the life of Marilyn Monroe as a metaphor for a young and exploited Latin American country. 4.00 pm Documentary : Crisis Of Capitalism Leads to the Hope of Labour (South Korea, 1998) 37mins - South Korean with English subtitles An inside look at labour activism in South Korea. 5.00pm Documentary : Dolls and Dust (South Korea, Thailand, Sri Lanka, 1998) Produced during the currency and economic crisis of 1998, this award winning video (4th Internationale VideOlympiade in South Africa 1998) presents first account testimonies from women workers in Sri Lanka, Thailand and South Korea on the impact of industrial restructuring, globalisation, and '(m)ale development' on their lives, communities and the environment. 7.00pm Feature: Manufacturing Consent The Political Economy of the Mass Media (USA,1992) English As relevant today as when it first came out, Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky, depict how contrary to the usual image of the press as objective in its search for truth, an underlying elite consensus largely structures all facets of the news, in which the marketplace and the economics of publishing significantly shape the news. It contrasts the double standards underlying accounts of free elections, free press, and governmental repression between Nicaragua and El Salvador; between the Russian invasion of Afghanistan and the American invasion of Vietnam; between the genocide in Cambodia under a pro-American government and genocide under Pol Pot. What emerges from this pathbreaking work is an account of just how propagandistic the mass media is, and how their ideological agenda dictates how issues are framed and topics chosen.
