Gra,

That's what I was thinking, actually. Running a co-op site, that is. Keep
in mind, Leftists have heavy e-mail traffic but less heavily accessed web
sites. Supporting sites would be easier (require a less powerful and
expensive server with less bandwith support) than an e-mail server.
Something could be done reasonably cheaply using Linux, given the low cost
of hard drive space these days (relatively speaking, since I would not put
up a Linux web server without a SCSI RAID-5 array.) If we knew how large
people's web pages were, we could work to customize the amount of space they
get (I doubt too many of us have sites larger than a few tens of megabytes,
and almost none over a gigabyte), which would mean that with traffic and
size taken into account, a relatively small server could be put together (at
most dual processor). The problem is not getting that up and running (we
could prolly scratch together enough donations to cover the several thousand
dollars for a decent server that could host 30, 40, 50 web sites.) Aside
from the problem of having all of those sites on one server from a security
point of view, we would have to cover the cost of a dedicated leased line
(even a low budget SDSL would cost us a few hundred a month to cover the
bandwidth needed), we would also have to consider the cost of a domain name,
and people would still have to get e-mail elsewhere, I think. E-mail volume
for Leftists tends to be so high as to be prohibitive for all the people who
would want to use it, especially when you account for attachments and such.

For now, pobox.com and mail.com offer free e-mail, but how long that will
continue is uncertain to me.

Just geeking. Anyone interested in this?

Cheers,
Chris
