I've tried to unravel the beginnings of the Italian debate around exodus
in a paper
somewhere on the list site. Sounds like we have similar concerns,
Aileen, although the more recent (for the Italians) notion of
'desertion' I think has a certain resonance, particularly when it is
raised in terms of military conflicts such as in Afghanistan.

Anyway, John H has written some critical things about Empire that touch
on the points you raise, don't know if they're online or not ...
