Chris  I am very impressed with your response. Though we still have disagreements, and important ones, many I feared would be there have simply slipped away.

Two things struck me with your response. First, translated into practical terms (ir into grass root struggle) there is not any reason to see conflicts based on my experience and what you have said (you may feel otherwise).

Second, the tendency to reduce grass-root struggles to one of gaining power in the union is a battle from which I carry many scares. There may, especially when things at this miliutant level are going well, the need to replace union leadership - but not as I have seen all to often for this to kill off the very grass-roots organisation which made it possible.

I have for this very reason suggested in such struggles that the grass roots organisation keeps a distance from the fortunes of any push at union leadership. I have seen also that at this point when "left" organisations get involved (why are they never there during the hard struggle) that milking the grass roots organisation for union advantage is almost inevitable. I still would not take an absolute position on this, but I find your reasoning on this most comfortable.

Just on a historical note - vis a vis the bureacrtic origin of unions. In this I do not disagree, but I cannot see an alternative (that is in the past) for this. A union to have an existence, in the conditions of the past, had to create a presence beyond the workers themselves (very early unions were limited and local precisely because they could not reach this stage). It was always a contradiction and pregnant with bad features, but as I said given the conditions of the past I see no alternative was viable except in an imaginary way.

But times change and especially the means of communication. I believe most strongly that these conditions no longer hold. In fact I would go much further, effective future unionism has to be international and the old-style bureacrtaic unionism of the past is niether up to the task or can it be applied. Economic union (I am here not talking about political articulation) in future struggle will be much more grass-roots by nature as well as international and flately organisied - say this not because there are any necessary virtues in any of these things but that are necessities of the present time.

My criticism of your approach in the first place as being too absolute had this idea in mind. At the moment I can reduce this to a far milder problem of a fixation of the term and idea of union with its past manifestations. My criticism would be in turn made much milder in that I believe there is something of an error in reacting to the manifestation by trying to find an essential division between union work (meant broadly in this context) and real political work (ie in terms of challenging the capital labour relation).

I hope this makes sense for in your explanation I need to withdraw my ambit criticisms and narrow them down to just this.

Now to suggest an another way of looking at the same problem. In my previous post I suggested that there was a necessary connection between economic unions and the labour market, while you saw no such dominant connection but rather that this was just a symptom of the deeper contradiction between labour and capital.

You are right, but I still cannot follow you in the way you have attacked the problem. Yes it is a symptom,  but a defining one. Labour market competition directly effects the capital labour relation, it impinges as a force on the conditions of labour, the rate of exploitation and the relative powerlessness of workers at work.

A union does a number of things, but the basis of combination is sharing the same labour market (which can be defined in a vast number of ways far beyond traditional trade, and industrial parameters). In controling the market (the price and conditions of labour) workers are directly challenging the capital componant of the capital-labour relation. Moreover, in exerting human conscious control (even if this means as viewing themselves as a collective commodity to some extent) it bites directly at the fetishisied nature of the relationship.

Of course I speak here as historical tendencies - and place combination/unionism as a general category bereft of its real historical characteristics (as they have emerged). Unionism does not in itself equal political conscious struggle, but it begins to denote conscious struggle as such, I believe in a class sense it under pins conscious political struggle in a direct way.

All this is very abstract and would remain so excpet that there has been drastic changes in the labour market (internationaisied for the first time in history) and a revolution in the means of communication (not fully realisied), it is this revolution where I believe the tools exist for a new type of unionism is possible, one largely bereft of the bureacratic overload and very much managed on an autonomous node to node basis. It is these changes and the possiblities it presents which make this otherwise abstract discussion a very much more practical one.

Following your logic, I think we may get to the same point, however, in defence of my own could I suggest its emphaisis of on the market aspects of combination actually starts to give definite shape to the endeavour? I mean this not as proof absolute but a matter to think upon.

On a side issue, the Marx quote, needless to say I believe he is talking of economic unions underpinning political organisation of the class hence his remark "But every class struggle IS a political struggle" makes the distinction in order to obliterate it as an ongoing and categorical difference, not reduce one thing to the other. The importance of retaining a relational connection of these two different things is that I beleive (and this is not in the Marx quote at all) that there are conflicts between sectional and political struggle of the class (in so far as political is taken as being beyond sectional existence). That sectional interests do not dissolve instantly when political struggle dominates and indeed political struggle may overlook the very real interests of isolated sections of the workers and the economic union has an important protective and realistic function to perform.

No-one need follow me on this, but union/combination based on no more than the haphazard way in which workers are brought into competition with one another, and having no greater ambition but to protect and foster their economic well-being as a collective is not something I would like to see disestablished until capital is absolutely gone and economic realtions have been replaced by conscious ones. In otherwords I see a long history ahead for combinations/unions even if I see but a short future for the way they are presently consituted.

Chris do not feel oblidged to answer every part in detail, but pick up on what you consider to tbe the vital points and make your response on these. I believe this is an area that needs a lot of clear thinking and it is also alas one most prone to sectarian disease, your response has been an example of just how such delicate things should be handled.

That is my second question.

Certainly, in many places the old form of union is no longer possible.  On the other hand, I know of people who have turned towards social unionism, the resurgence of some IWW organizing, and the discussion of the return of the hiring-hall based union (but would that make them more or less than glorified temp agencies???)

The question is not to quit the union, call for its decertification, reform the unions, etc.  The problem is to organize independently and defend independent workers' action and organization, in spite of the union and against it where necessary. 

That does NOT mean not supporting workers' struggles, but to many people who have become unable to separate workplace struggle from unionism, that is what they see.  For me, I can support workers' struggle to organize themselves, regardless of whether or not they want a union, but I am obliged to say that they will control their struggle and their situation only as long as they control their organization and act independently.  Given capitalist society, given the limited nature of most struggles, a union will result, the inevitable outcome of both a limited struggle, the nature of every partial victory as a partial defeat, and the fact that the dominant layer of the workers in a workplace struggle do not want to overthrow capital and therefore WANT an orgaization to do the work.

I am pointing out that this will eventually mean an apparatus which will become the enemy of workers in struggles which threaten to break the boundaries that capital will except, and sometimes well before that.  The ossification of the struggle into an apparatus working within the confines of capital can only do one thing (and that goes for more than unions, btw.)

Greg, I think you miss Marx's point, which is clearly about the political union of workers, not about trade unions.  Marx here seems to be speaking about the transformation of the self-organization of the class from disconnected local struggles into a coherent national struggle against capital.  Some have also read this as a party in the vanguard sense, but I think that Marx means the historical party of the class, not some single political organization.  But that is my take.
