Subject: Re: AUT: Re: no war but the class war, again From: "Dave Graham" <davgraham-AT-merseymail.com> Date: Tue, 01 Oct 2002 15:56:21 +0100 Dear all I've used the subject for a different thread to send this out but on reflection it seem quite apt, for its probable that greg's report is out of date and the issue is not technology but the war itself - depending on how the Bush administration play this. Gra ______________________________________________________________ Greg Dropkin" <gregd-AT-gn.apc.org> Subject : [merseyactivist] US dockers locked out Date : Tue, 1 Oct 2002 12:55:08 +0100 hi, see www.labournet.net for the ongoing lockout of 10,000 ILWU dockers on the US West Coast - which began Friday. Many of these people were at the forefront of actions in solidarity during the Liverpool lockout. Donald Rumsfeld (US Sec. of Defense) and Tom Ridge (Director of Homeland Security) have been leaning on the ILWU all summer, claiming that a strike would prejudice national security. This means the war is an issue in the dispute - and at least in Oakland (San Francisco) the ILWU local exec. has come out strong against war. The lockout began when dockers decided to implement the safety code and federal / state health & safety legislation to the letter. The main issue in the dispute is new technology. It must be the most significant industrial battle in the US now, and if the lockout continues the situation will involve r&f teamsters (lorry drivers) as well as dockers in Australia and most likely Japan. also - photos from Sat. in London...
