So far the response to war in Toronto has been weak... there have been large demos and events and certainly I would say that the vast majority of people here are against millitary action against iraq (if not always for the best of reasons). However the anti-war coalitions are largely dominated by the International Socialists and large labour groupings which ensures that they are large but dull. One of the "problems" has been that the vast majority of solid organizing energy in Toronto goes into the ontario coalition against poverty which i am very actively involved in and which has had a hard time orienting itself to the anti-war movement. On Saturday OCAP, The Canadian Arab Federation, Anti-Racist Action, Worker Communist Party of Iran and The New Socialist Group (no time to describe their politics but they basically advocate 'socialism from below') will be marching as a no one is illegal contingent which promises to give a more millitant feel to the demo and in the future a more millitant direction. We are also planning on escalating our actions around immigrant and refugee defense (which ocap has been working on for years; preventing deportations, etc.) in response to the escalation of attacks against them. I am pretty excited about Saturday and beyond in Toronto... miked --- from list aut-op-sy-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
