exactly! This was an excellent post and I couldn't agree more with the
analysis of the anti-globalization movement vis a vis actual community
struggles. It's also very true that the anti-war movement is an excellent
opportunity to connect all kinds of struggles. there was about 50,000 people
march in toronto and the march was filled with people and organizations outside
the realm of organized left politics but very much involved in the politics of
their own communities. ocap distributed a leaflet that read:

STOP THE ATTACKS AT HOME!

In early April, the Ontario Government will host a summit on “border security”
in Toronto. Using the War on Terrorism as cover, Canada and the United States
are trying to create a security perimeter around North America in an attempt to
limit and control the flow of immigrants and refugees through their borders.
At this summit, Premier Ernie Eves and Minister of Public Safety and Security
Bob Runciman, will plot with representatives of the INS, Immigration Canada,
border state governments and corporate interests about how to further exploit
and profit off of so-called “illegals”. Already, Canadian officials are
turning people away at the U.S. border and openly discussing the jailing of all
non-status people in one of Ontario’s super-jails. It is appalling to see the
willingness of the Canadian government to crawl even further under the covers
with the U.S. state, facilitating the creation of a racist “Fortress North
America” on colonized land and under the guise of national security. Increased
monitoring, intimidation, jailing and deportation of refugees, immigrants,
migrant workers, and non-status people appears to be just a first step.
Legislation in the works will give judges the individual power to deport any
Canadian resident – citizens included – in secret, undisclosed trials with no
opportunity for appeal. This mounting racist attack will not go unanswered.
Both Canada and the United States make millions off of the precarious position
of undocumented workers, who are thanked with the unceremonious boot of the INS
and Immigration Canada. When these snakes gather in Toronto, we’ll be there to
take them on. Join us in the fight against the hidden war at home.

The leaflet went over very well and with a nation-wide consulta on immigrant
and refugee resistance taking place in Montreal this weekend and the launch of
a no one is illegal network in toronto, i am pretty excited about the
possibilities of connecting various and different struggles in a new way.
