Hi Nate and all

I don't read or post on this forum nearly as often as
I should -- not enough time I'm afraid -- but I felt
like I should 'butt in' ...

I wasn't too thrilled with the review in News and
Letters, which I saw a few days ago, because the
reviewer seemed to be happier to pull things back
rather than move forward. Like Chris says, it is too
jargonisitc and in places didn't seem to have taken in
what was in the book at all (i.e. "The State still
needs to be confronted, challenged and ultimately
SMASHED." How do you 'smash' social relationships?)The
reviewer still sticks to the old story that Hegel and
Marx's dialectics are the same thing, and when
discussing commodoty fetishism holds up Marx as an
omniscient deity--in my view JH does a great job of
sincerely trying to move on.

Actually, I wrote a piece on the book about four
months ago. I don't know if anyone's seen it, but I
explain my thoughts more fully there. It's at the Bad
Subjects site:

http://eserver.org/bs/reviews/2002-12-3-04.19PM.html

Since then, I've read the book once more (I read it
twice before I wrote the review) and I mostly still
agree with what I wrote, if obviously there is a good
deal more yet to say. One or two things are phrased a
little oddly, it's too terse and a couple of points I
would modify, but read it anyway ...

Regards

Barry
