I've also had some problems with lost pages/sites. For stuff that's only
recently vanished (or temporarily inaccessible) Google often holds cached
pages for a while. Some ingenuity with search strings is required but
I've recovered small sites that way.

For stuff that vanished a while ago, if you have the URL of the page/site
the Wayback Machine at http://www.archive.org/ can be very useful. For
long established sites it often has multiple 'snapshots'. (However it
seems to have a problem with browsers other than IE). I gather it is at
least six months before pages are indexed so very recent sites/pages
probably won't be obtainable (though they might become so eventually).
