Subject: Re: AUT: Christopher Hill

Hill was my favourite of all historians. I came across
his work a couple of years ago when I did a
dissertation on Gerrard Winstanley and the English
Revolution and was hooked ever since. I tried to get
in touch with him once but found out that he had
Alzheimer's disease--which in many ways is even more
sad. His wife Bridgett (also a great historian) who
cared for him had died towards the end of last year.
He had a great gift for historical narrative and
insight, and in many ways pioneered with Edward
Thompson and co. the 'history from below' approach we
see in writers like Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker
today.

However, he had had an incredibly long and productive
life, despite a couple of dodgy books early on in his
career (the one on Lenin especially) and was always
worth reading.
