<P>Are 'tactics' necessarily tied to a means/ends rationality?  Of course, it is a dangerous move locate 'tactics' in this dichotomy which seems to legitimize the old Stalinist argument that you can't make an omlette without breaking some eggs.  But what about Certeau's argument which suggests that strategies occupy a sort of discursive 'place', while tactics are not granted such a privileged position?  Isn't there a difference between my decision to skip work by calling in sick and my articulation of a set of principles to guide action in a mass demonstration?  It seems to me that strategies must make distinctions between means and ends.  From Certeau's standpoint, they are inscribed in a language which destroys the immediacy of action.  They are stuck, attached to a particular privileged discursive 'place'; whereas tactics can never occupy such a position but rather move across 'space'.  (I don't know if this is valid; perhaps it's just poststructuralist wanking). From my limited understanding of self-valorization, it seems to me that it can never be captured in a discursive 'place', it always seems to allude discourse and undermines the means/ends dichotomy; so I am tempted to contend that self-valourization is a sort of tactic.</P>

<DIV></DIV>>Not directly to your question but a question of
<DIV></DIV>>a more general nature from what you write above.
<DIV></DIV>>Is it very meaningful to draw a clear distinction
<DIV></DIV>>between tactical and strategic. Anarchists have
<DIV></DIV>>tended to refuse to do so, and I think for rather
<DIV></DIV>>good reasons, stressing the intimate relation
<DIV></DIV>>betwen means and ends. Added to this, seeing
<DIV></DIV>>tactical as something seperate easily lends itself
<DIV></DIV>>to instrumental thought. Some rather bad

<DIV></DIV>>Harry Cleaver can answers for himself, but my

<DIV></DIV>>it in much the same way, if expressed in different
