From: "Nate Holdren" <nateholdren-AT-hotmail.com> Subject: AUT: Negri on Piquetero book Date: Wed, 02 Apr 2003 23:47:21 -0500 Hey all- This is a translation of Negri's comments on a book by Colective Situaciones about the piqueteros, among other things. I haven't read the book yet so I can't comment on that. This is translated from a Spanish version of Negri's remarks, which I assume were written in Italian. Also, my Spanish isn't perfect, so apologies for any awkwardness or distortions. If anyone catches mistakes, please let me know. cheers, Nate No more weekdays, they hanged Monday, shot Thursday, sliced up Friday! Do these situations speak of a new configuration of revolutionary subjects? Are we in the presence of a new Paris Commune? And the always dangerous comparison: Will ideology apply to reality? But maybe here it's worth the trouble. Here there is something new: the creation of the violence of the shock with the power that permitted the deconstruction of the continuity of social and political relations that had detained Argentinian development and open new singular apparatuses and subjectivities that construct a new composition of resistance and desire, of counter-power. Argentina - the struggles of its proletariat, the paradoxical confluences of the average layers towards this last - affected the picture of traditional analysis of the class struggle and opposing to the habitual rites of the left the invention of new comportments, unexpected and untimely. Like how Marx opposed the communards to the socialist synogogue, so we carry today from Argentina an example of new constitutions of the multitude. It is the example that can localize essentially in the documented struggles of the piqueteros: the argentinian revolt against neo-liberalism, the book of the Colectivo Situaciones. A radical institutional crisis ("There goes everything" was a cry that denounced and registered the minority condition to which the traditional political parties had been reduced), to a consequent fall of the legitimacy of the representative function (that participated in a general public and private corruption), to a political crisis (proven by the impossibility of replacing the habitual models of constitutional alliance between social classes and bourgeois hegemony over the system), to a financial crisis (of payment of the debt and investment of flows from the periphery to the center) and - finally - to a highly profound social crisis that destroyed the productive capacity (extreme unemployment, savage precarization of the employed) and reproductive (crisis of public instruction, of health) to all of which responded a multitudinous counterpower that was organized in autonomous systems of production, interchange and political organization, in totally original forms. From workers' self-management of the factories to the massive occupation of public buildings on the part of the neighborhood assemblies, from the construction from below of a new currency (and a new market and new modalities of change) to the revolutionary exercise of legitimate force on the part of the piquetes, what is evidenced is an autonomous constitution of the multitudes that carry with themselves an energy of universal conviction and egalitarian social recomposition. The martyrdom of the generation destroyed by the military dictatorship of the years from 76-83 and the desperation of the insurgent populations against neoliberal globalization of the 90s finds here the truth of a new experience in radical social construction. When today it is said "a new world is possible," if we do not want to be lying navel-gazing sycophants then we should have the courage to imagine the possibility of imagining a new way, of not trembling before the threats of capitalist apologists, of inventing for ourselves the possibility of a new currency, of thinking that it is possible to organize labor, a "dignified labor". I don't know what will happen in Latin American in the next decade. I only know that the continent is developing its activity in an extreme and effective social laboratory. Whatever it is, and whatever subject thinks it, the distance that there is between the Argentinian piqueteros and the Brasilian Lula is minimal: the Latin American laboratory raises in effective manner against the unilateralism of North American and global capitalism. Mutatis mutandis, Latin America is placing a subversive wedge inside and against globalization and this wedge corresponds to that whichthe movements are producing in Europe. The social and political experimentation in Argentina - with its incredible coalitions between organized unemployed and elements of the middles classes impoverished by the IMF - show on one hand the construction of the multitude and on the other the impossibility of offering resistance within the spaces of the Nation-State. Thus, in a South with civil courage [anger?] but pauperism and a North rich but socially disintegrated, form piquetes of resistance [note:I think 'piquete' can mean both 'picket' and 'pole']. The book by Colectivo Situacions composes fragments of a global discours, founded on the experience of the Argentinian struggle, an investigation that is directly organization of struggle. The communist political content of these struggles are evident (como es evidente que los medios europeos no informan al respecto [note: I don't know how to translate this - 'as it is evident that ?the European media/means don't inform on this matter? ?the average European is not informed?). It is certain that it can and should take them as a starting point. When we confront the problem of counterpower and referred to it, outside of anarchic and/or spontaneous experiences, to the present crisis and to the for in which exodus (what is one of the figures of counterpower) can develop; when we give accounts of the enormous dis-symetry between the means of repression and the insurrectional development of the multitudes; when the problem of the "dualism of power" is replanted in the biopolitical condition, then we begin to enter "the situation." Thanks to the Argentinian piqueteros that invented extraordinary forms of protest and of organization from below; thanks to the popular assemblies, that are reinventing means of interchange and of managment of social services; thanks to the militants, that organized new networks of subversive communication; thanks - finally - to the Colectivo Situaciones, that in the vital interchange with the multitude knows to give us critical information and hopeful [awaited?] reflection. version in Spanish below and at http://www.lafogata.org/003arg/arg4/ar_rev.htm EL REINO DEL REVÉS. 31 de marzo del 2003 Argentina: La revuelta piquetera Toni Negri Radar ¿En qué consiste la experiencia argentina? _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus --- from list aut-op-sy-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
