Worker and environment activists demonstrate at Newmont offices

Detik.com - July 23, 2004

Dadan Kuswaraharja, Jakarta – Worker and environment activists demonstrated at the PT Newmont Mining Group Jakarta office following the exposure of pollution in the Gulf of Buyat which has cased Minamata sickness. They were demanding that Newmont take responsibility. The action was held on the grounds of PT Newmont offices which is located on the 25 floor of the Rajawali Tower in the Mega Kuningan area of Jakarta on Friday July 23. The action started at around 10am and ended at 11.30am. The activists came from a number of groups including the Indonesian National Front for Labour Struggle (FNPBI), the Indonesian Environment Forum (Walhi), the Mining Network (Jatam), the People’s Democratic Party (PRD) and the National Student League for Democracy (LMND).

According to activists Newmont has caused the Indonesian people a great deal of suffering. They have not only caused illness by polluting the environment but have also acted arbitrarily toward workers. PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara for example suspended 200 workers and has failed to pay them overtime money. “This case proves that Newmont is only interested in profit without safeguarding the rights of the people and its workers”, said Dita Indah Sari from FNPBI. The activists are demanding that PT Newmont take responsibility for the environmental damage and sickness in the Gulf of Buyat in Minahasa, North Sulawesi and that PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara immediately pay the outstanding overtime wages and cancel the suspensions. They are also demanding that Newmont stop its mining operations. "Go to hell Newmont" and "Newmont but take responsibility" demanded the activists in posters with they carrying. (iy)

PALESTINE: Army attacks roadblock removal near Jenin (report from ISM)

On Wednesday, July 28 at 6:00pm, Palestinians and Internationals attempted to remove a roadblock at the entrance to the village of Jabad, west of Jenin. When they arrived the Israeli Army was already at the roadblock and had set up razor wire in front of the entrance to Jabad. They began throwing sound bombs and firing tear gas canisters directly at the 300-400 demonstrators in an attempt to disperse them. The demonstrators refused to leave. The Palestinians and Internationals remained at the roadblock for two hours, negotiating with the Israeli soldiers in Hebrew, Arabic and English. The soldiers responded by aiming tear gas canisters at the demonstrators resulting in the injury of three ISM internationals. According to eye-witness reports, a United States ISM volunteer was hit in the face with a tear gas canister and received multiple cuts and suffered tear gas inhalation. A Swedish volunteer was hit in the head and was overwhelmed by the tear gas. The third international,
an Irish citizen, was hit in the ankle with a tear canister. All three were taken to the hospital. A baby was also hospitalized for tear gas inhalation and then released. It is clear that the Israeli Army was firing the tear gas canisters directly at the demonstrators which caused the injuries. The Army has imposed a curfew on the village of Jabad and village residents are unable to leave their homes.

PAKISTAN: Water protests (from CPMK list)

VEHARI, July 24: The growers from different villages strongly protested against acute shortage of irrigation water here on Saturday.

Their representatives Jawad Masood Ghuman, Rai Nawaz Kharal, Habib

Ahmad, Haji Yaqoob and Sardar Chaudhry told newsmen that their crops were drying up due to the shortage of water which they attributed to

negligence and mismanagement by the irrigation officials.

They alleged that irrigation officials were selling water to the

influential landlords of the area. They complained that the staff concerned of the Thingi west bar irrigation department always remained out of their offices whenever they contacted them. They said water level in canals should have been six feet but it was only one and a half foot. Due to the shortage of water, over 80,000 acres

agricultural land and crops were affected including over two dozen

villages.

ISRAEL: Detained human rights activist begins hunger strike (report from ISM)

A press conference was held Monday, July 26, in East Jerusalem to

discuss the Israeli government's efforts to block human rights

activists and especially International Solidarity Movement activists

from entering Israel and the Occupied Territories. At the time of

the press conference, an Italian lawyer Angelo Lazos, was and

continues to be, detained at the Ben Gurion Airport and is being

threatened with deportation. Angelo has decided to begin a hunger

strike to protest his detention and possible deportation.

Referring to the fact that activists associated with the ISM are

being detained and deported, Andoni stated,"ISM has been unjustly

and repeatedly accused of being a security threat. ISM activists

are denied entry, arrested, deported and treated with brutality as

they stand for peace and actively protest against the vast range of

collective punishments forced on innocent Palestinians."
