Ah, there's the rub. Still, that's something I think many of us still 
struggle with to this day, like what exactly are you supposed to "do" 
with all yer theory? His portrayal Ishmael's relationship to the mates 
and Ahab on one hand and the crew on the other(and his portrayal of the 
crew itself as some sort of noble savages) leave something to be 
desired, but considering when he wrote it, etc etc, it is really quite 
insightful in reading in Melville a prophecy of certain twentieth 
century "types", even if it is somewhat painful to be a "Typee". Sorry, 
I couldnt resist that. Hey, on a completely different note, I'm getting 
married in less than two weeks, yikers!
