Yeah, totally. At least, I think so, it's part of why I like doing
translating. On the other hand, translating stuff that's going to come
out in english anyway and where the money from the commodity version
of the text would go to a good cause... that's not as exciting.
I've done some work translating stuff by the Colectivo Situaciones
(Sebastian and I have a draft of one of their books, still need to
revise it though, and find a publisher), and the CS have asked us to
be careful about disseminating the text electronically - the situation
is bad in Argentina and the CS need the money from book sales to live.
It's like what I used to do when I was more involved with punk rock -
I'm big about copying music from big labels and big bands, but if it's
a smaller band or local band I really like I try to buy their cds (or
if I copy something of theirs I try to buy a tshirt or something)
because I want to support them.

I'm convinced of all the political arguments against intellectual
property, and convinced that in many cases free distribution can
actually boost book sales and such (Wu Ming have made this argument,
in their piece 'publishers have everything to gain from copyleft'),
but there has to be a plan and an infrastructure and so on, otherwise
resources get diverted from worthwhile initiatives that really need
it.

I dunno. Just my thoughts. And of course, when the Marcos/Taibo book
is finished and someone finally does translate it I'm sure I'll
happily photocopy my copy for broke friends and stuff, regardless of
any principles that may or may not be at stake.
