Darren - Am a new fan of experimental, electronic and computer music. An
article in THE WIRE earlier this year on Iannis Xenakis interested me. I also
subscribe to STREETSOUND because I like "jungle" music. Last Saturday I
bought the second edition (pb) [1993] of Peter Manning's "Electronic &
Computer Music -AT- Tower Records. Will begin it when I finish Eric
Salzman's"Twentieth-Century Music: An Introduction".

I wrote to MUSIC PERCEPTION and THE MUSICAL QUARTELY for information and
requested sample copies. Maybe the music school -AT- Yale has a journal that will
be helpful?

Here in Washington, D. C. I don't know where to go to listen to, or meet
others interested in, experimental music. Musicians and fans of jungle music
here tell me there's no major radio station in the area giving jungle music
air time. Same for experiemental music? I buy CDs (used if possible) of
artists I read about.

I like L. Berio and was on the verge heading up to New York on the spur of the
moment to hear a concert of his music -AT- the 82nd Street (92nd? not sure) Y
earlier this month.

Just getting into this as you can see.

Hello All;

I'm an American composer interested in what people have to say about
contemporary avant-garde composers, their music and audiences.

I welcome anyone's comments, ideas, suggestions, anecdotes, etc. regarding
finding/creating audiences; marketing contemporary music; getting new works
performed, recorded, and programmed; being in touch with a fan base; etc.

What are current trends in the acceptance of new avant-garde music? Are
people listening? Who are the audiences and where are they at? Who are the
radical composers today, and how are they being accepted? Are record
companies receptive to new music? What are they doing to promote contemporary
composers and connect them with their audiences? Does an avant-garde composer
care about his/her audience? Who is taking part in the musical avant-garde of
the 90's?

These are just a few questions..

I'd like to hear/see some discussion on contemporary musical avant-garde in
any of its genres or styles (including classical, jazz, rock, rap/hip-hop,
etc.,
etc..)

Thanks,

Darren Michael Nelsen 102711.556-AT-compuserve.com
