Because they are easier for a harried bookstore employee to obtain and the
discount to the store is, say, 45% while the discount the small press can
offer is perhaps 30%.

If you can publish 20,000 copies and match thje trade publishers' discounts
you can do it.
If you can only do 1500 copies of a title, you cannot.
