I agree with your major points, but the above is not completely true.  If I
remember correctly, Inland's trouble was mainly due to the fact that they
hired some fast-talking swindler to come in and run the company.  He
proceeded to rob them blind (and is prison now, I believe).  When the smoke
cleared, we (Autonomedia) had lost a nice little chunk of change.  I'm sure
a bunch of other publishers got hurt too.  However, I wouldn't be surprised
if Inland found some way to pay off their debts to their bigger and more
powerful customers, and there's the rub.
