Nah. If people wanted to invent their own art they'd be doing it already.
People do want to be surprised, just they want to be surprised inside narrow
parameters. There'll always be combinatoires, those who like assembling more
than receiving. And I think that most people will probalby always, like now,
like receiving more than assembling. It's a luxury position. And that's why,
brad, Web stuff isn't very different from other modes. It opens a door to a
few more makers, but as I say, audience is audience. The relationship of
|made thing -> audience| is still the same, even if there's a few more
makers reaching (and I think numbers stuff is fairly trivial here, because
of the extremely low impact of most of these constructions) a few more
passives. And such avocational makers have always been around. Raconteurs,
the guy who always knows the new joke at work, good cooks, etc.--but perhaps
now, unfortunately, such delightful people will all be flogging away making
more boring Web pages, and we'll be stuck with email jokes consumed along
with Chips Ahoy. Sigh.
