Well, the Polish early-20th-cetury artist Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz, 
aka Witkacy, assumed the posture of of doing "systematic" research into this.
He ran a "portrait factory" with (I think) some other painters.  They would
take various combinations of drugs and then produce portraits on
commission, and would list on each painting the exact combination of
drugs under whose influence the painting was produced.  This, I think,
is all I know about this without looking at not-on-hand books.
