Subject: Re: The Linguistic Turn Date: Mon, 9 Feb 1998 22:23:52 -0000 Hi Michael In response to your call: >The editors of Why not Sneeze? invite proposals and contributions of >original work for THE LINGUISTIC TURN, a sub-site of language-based art >works. > I have been slowly developing a piece of work which may fit your criteria: >THE LINGUISTIC TURN seeks to acknowledge the textual dimension of Internet >communication, while at the same time taking advantage of the advanced >graphical, spatial and temporal features that are possible within the Web >environment. We are interested in projects and pieces that function as >autonomous works of art and that emphasise the materiality of language by >making its physical dimension visible though spatialisation, time or >movement. URL: Storey.htm Mailto: Home Page is a piece of work which began in the Storey Art Gallery in Lancaster. Two pieces of sheet steel 6ft x 3ft x 2mm were leant against the gallery wall. A piece of text taken from an e-mail discussion list was scratched on to its surface with a sharp nail. The title of the work was laid out using childrens magnetic letters. Visitors to the gallery were invited to leave mail messages using either the nail, a permanent but less visible record reminicent of pretechnological scratched marks, or using the magnetic letters drawn from containers available nearby, these messages being more vulnerable to alteration but more arresting. I now have photographic documentation of the piece plus intend to make imprints from the surface of the steel. I am looking to host these images as part of a web based work which explores the themes exposed so far and exploits the environment and media of the Web. This is very much a work in progress at this stage. 2 images attached. tn.jpg and tn1.jpg Hope that's OK. regards Taylor PS do you have access to any video conferencing, I would like to set up a session in March. This would be an opportunity for students at this end, but need not necessarily involve students at the other end - part of an initiative to raise students awareness of their identity and place within Europe. --- from list avant-garde-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
