This sounds like a description of desire and not passion, desire is never
solicitous of the object  , because theire is never any object of desire

Yes positively a discription of desire which is always already focused on a
representation -- that is not an object but an objectification.  But
perhaps  the notion of preference here is misplaced  -- desire because its
objective is an abstraction can never locate its preference because anything
that is real is also lacking.  Conversally  passion which is built on
preferences  accepts no substitutes.  Desire is intellectual , passion is
emotional.
