I'm just a young, unestablished (pre-academy even!) artist but it seems to me the whole notion of the avant-garde has been integrated into the new(?) utopian/romantic complex of marxism/critical thoery. So that theory today is looking for the avant-garde to be something that is out side the framwork of theory, or at least pushing the borders: Theory is trying to thoerise about what lies outside it. But as art theory is theory of art, not of theory, it is by definition looking to the past, not the now. As the now is forever escaping us, it seems to me an heoric but doomed enterprise. Another line of argument would be that this hunt for the avant garde, is a symptom of the ever increasing hatred of art in the so called critical theory .
