But, you're right, the term didn't get much circulation untill about the mid80s with the publication of F. Lyotard's book the Postmodern Condition. Then it spread like wildfire through the avant-garde academia...(a contradiction in terms?) It subsequently became popular in artistic circles, with the 80s dominance of "theory" etc....
