No, it isn't duty that compels me to do things that I sometimes find
tedious or annoying because they take time from artmaking or my kids or
being in the woods--it's that if I see a need for something I can finally
see that I'm the one to fill it.

I used to wait for someone else to do it.

Actually, miekal, I don't think we really disagree much. I too chose to
leave artcentral for a place that's just its own place. I too value the
making that people do here that doesn't generally get the name of art. At 2
estate sales last week we found such things. One was a collection of shaped
plywood boards with various artifacts fastened to them with small leather
straps--one was covered with various chunks of chromed plumbing pipes,
another with a zillion coathooks, some very old, some newer, way too close
together to use; another with hinges of all types, another with small
intimate items--a hairbrush, a couple of hairpins, old and worn things--we
got them all for $6. The other was a box full of diamond willow sticks
whittled into odd plant forms, oiled and polished. It was also $6.

Apparently $6 is the artprice o the week. I guess the relatives don't think
much of grandpa's weird stuff. I've also found beautiful handwork--weaving,
embroidery, etc--for similar prices. So I'm afraid this admittedly really
fantastic stuff isn't impressing itself on the local folks with great
force--although it could perhaps.

But I also do stuff for galleries and museums cause that's where other
artists work and I do like artists. Also I like being paid to do things I
love because then I can devote more time to them without robbing my kids.

More making of all kinds! And the time to see.
