Sorry if someone already answered this...

The .mid file would sound good if you have a good sound card.  Authors
would (hopefully) use the general midi set to assign voices and then either
embed the file in the page, or provide a link to the file, where a
start-stop control panel would be generated by the browser, if the helper
applications are properly set in the browser prefs. (Breath)  The sound
card will assume that the general midi set is being used.  You can actually
get some interesting unintended effects as you listen to your compositions
on other people's machines, interpreted by their soundcards.  I'm trying to
get into the guts of the thing so that these GM voicenames can then be
randomly (okay, it's really pseudo-randomly) assigned.  Fun!
