All,

The following works aren't /strictly/ avant-garde*, but worth
checking out:
  . Chris Ware's "The Acme Novelty Library"
  . Kyle Baker's "Why I Hate Saturn", "The Cowboy Wally Show"
  . Peter Milligan's "Shade the Changing Man"

And a friend tells me "Finder" is worth the read.

Richard Grossman's "The Book of Lazarus" isn't a comic, but
might appeal to folk who like books with pictures.

I'd love to hear other suggestions (particularly less mainstream
works).
