If you are going to read Richard Grossman--start with "The Alphabet Man"---a
stunning book.

All of Alan Moore's books really throw a wrench into the corporate comic
works.

 All,

The following works aren't /strictly/ avant-garde*, but worth
 checking out:
. Chris Ware's "The Acme Novelty Library"
. Kyle Baker's "Why I Hate Saturn", "The Cowboy Wally Show"
. Peter Milligan's "Shade the Changing Man"

And a friend tells me "Finder" is worth the read.

Richard Grossman's "The Book of Lazarus" isn't a comic, but
might appeal to folk who like books with pictures.

I'd love to hear other suggestions (particularly less mainstream
 works).

 Regards,
 -Adam.

 * ...but in comics it seems a crazy notion to produce something
 worthwhile...
