   PARIS, Sept 3 (AFP) - Paris police stepped in Friday to evict artists
from a squat located in the heart of the city while garbage collectors
swept up their works to be sent to the rubbish heap.
   The square in front of the elegant Bourse stock market building was
taken over by riot police who circled the remnants of three months of
collective art exhibited on the pavement, keeping passers-by back as
garbage trucks moved in to collect the works.
   The artists -- about 50 of them who belong to a group called Yabon'Arts
-- had spread straw, garbage, wire mesh, a shopping cart, a baby stroller,
paintings and other assorted items around the square Thursday after being
ordered to evacuate an empty six-storey building nearby.
   "Our aim is to attract attention to our plight which is for the city to
help us find some reasonably-priced studios where we can live and work,"
said Sacha X, one of the artists, standing near a poster that read "The
police have declared war on us".
   The group squatted in the building facing the Paris Bourse at the end
of May and gradually turned it into an eye-catching paint-daubed oddity,
with plastic sheeting hanging out of windows and straw piled at the
entrance.
   Though most of the nearby businesses initially took it all in stride
and some even backed the artists' action, things turned sour as the summer
months went by.
   "It was all fun at the beginning but the place is starting to stink and
it really looks bad now," said Janin Ezer, who owns a stationery shop
under the building.
   "The city should look into their demands but the whole thing has gone
overboard."
