I don't know who your brother was talking to, but Glasgow is not very far
from Belfast (a short trip by boat). I suspect the person who described
himself as proud of not being Irish was of the Unionist persuasion...

Just a guess. There are a great many Irish Catholic descended folk in
Glasgow who would profess the opposing view.
