I don know how "avant" it is, it's mainly kind of spang in the middle, maybe,
but "Down and Out in Paris and London" is at least beyond easy boho-ism in
that it's a record of real exigency. And as a 10yrold (then)James Morris's
"Cities" was pretty transformative. I hear S/he has a new book, on Trieste of
all wonderful places.
